Depth versus Rigidity in the Design of International Agreements∗

چکیده

I show that there is a trade-off in the design of international agreements between depth and rigidity. Increasing the depth of required cooperation both lowers the likelihood of compliance with the treaty and decreases the stability of the regime. In contrast, as the rigidity of an agreement increases (and there is less opportunity for tolerated defection from treaty obligations), the likelihood of compliance with the treaty increases while the stability of the regime decreases. Treaty designers must balance short-term compliance against the long-run stability of a cooperative regime. I argue that this implies a negative relationship between depth and rigidity in observed treaties. In international trade, agreements that mandate deep tariff reductions will be more likely to include flexibility mechanisms—such as formal dispute settlement mechanisms, escape clauses, and antidumping procedures—while agreements that require shallow cooperation will be more rigid. I find strong support for this argument by conducting empirical tests on a dataset of 57 Asian trade agreements. ∗Many thanks to B. An empirical test of new developments in coalition theory for the design of international environmental agreements

We consider new developments in coalition theory for the design of international environmental agreements (IEAs). Applying an empirical model on climate change that comprises benefit and cost estimates from abatement for 12 world regions, we analyze how the design of an agreement affects the success of self-enforcing IEAs. We analyze single versus multiple coalitions, open versus exclusive memb...

Generation of Love Wave in a Media with Temperature Dependent Properties Over a Heterogeneous Substratum

The present paper deals with the generation of Love waves in a layer of finite thickness over an initially stressed heterogeneous semi-infinite media. The rigidity and density of the layer are functions of temperature, i.e. they are temperature dependent.  The lower substratum is an initially stressed medium and its rigidity and density vary linearly with the depth. The frequency relation of Lo...

The politics of trade agreement design : revisiting the depth - flexibility nexus

Existing research indicates that different dimensions of the design of international institutions are interrelated. In particular, deep agreements have been shown to be more flexible. We make two contributions to this literature. On the one hand, we argue and empirically show that the positive relationship between depth and flexibility holds for preferential trade agreements (PTAs). On the othe...

Influence of Rigidity, Irregularity and Initial Stress on Shear Waves Propagation in Multilayered Media

The propagation of shear waves in an anisotropic fluid saturated porous layer over a prestressed semi-infinite homogeneous elastic half-space lying under an elastic homogeneous layer with irregularity present at the interface with rigid boundary has been studied. The rectangular irregularity has been taken in the half-space. The dispersion equation for shear waves is derived by using the pertur...
